PSYCHO-FICTION MANIFESTOPsycho-Fiction is a new genre for films that are fantastic and strange, gearing towards fine arts - not horror. Psycho-fiction is chiefly concerned with diverse cases of neurosis, complexes and other phenomena of the inner mind. There is an extra focus upon dreams and their symbols, analysis of the unconscious and the possibility of paranormal psychological phenomenon. The psychological theories of Carl G Jung and Sigmund Freud will serve as a springboard to fantastic realms. Psycho-fiction could overlap with Science Fiction, yet is not interested in futuristic or robotic issues. It is only interested in the underlying psychology of scientific thought. Psycho-Fiction expresses itself powerfully through the use of irrational and abstract imagery. Yet the peculiar visuals always fit within a clear, understandable story. The endings are always satisfying, completing the narrative flow. The more times one views a Psycho-Fiction film, the greater the levels of viewer interpretation. Experimental, non-traditional approaches play greatly into Psycho-Fiction. They are always balanced by a formal structure. Psycho-Fiction must be differentiated from the "Horror" genre. While both share often-similar iconographies, they vary dramatically. There is a problem with the term "Horror". It denotes a limited structure. The purpose of Horror films is chiefly to frighten people. Religious imagery is often exploited in Horror films, as a motivating force. Psycho-Fiction avoids such methods, focusing on the visual poetry and the drama within. Psycho-Fiction seeks to entertain, always. The classic requirements of story telling are always adhered to. The Visual / Psychological power found in "Art Films" is combined with the bold narrative trust of commercial cinema. Above all, we must believe in the validity of spiritual inspiration. Deep-rooted, psychological situations are examined and dissected, so as to better understand them. Then, these diverse fragments are restructured, and fit into a compelling narrative, and thus seen in a brand new light. SCREAMING MAD GEORGE |
